Tomie just accepted an invitation from the president of Pratt Institute to accept an honorary degree during Commencement Exercises on May 18, 2009, in New York City. Tomie graduated from Pratt in 1956 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

In May of 2005, Tomie returned to the stage for the Newport Opera House production of "State Fair." (Tomie later announced that it was also his farewell from the stage.) Photos of Tomie as the intoxicated pickle judge (i.e., the pickled pickle judge) can be seen at:
