Congress declared Thanksgiving a Federal holiday in 1941, thanks to the efforts of Sarah Josepha Hale, author of the poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Sarah Josepha Hale was born in Newport, New Hampshire, near Tomie's hometown.
