Where in the World Is Tomie's Wildebeest?

Henry is in Charlene Carson's second grade class at the Northville School in New Milford, Connecticut. Henry's Flat Nesy, the reading cow, visited the future site of Tomie's gnu. Tomie's gnu will be in front of Morgan Hill Bookstore in New London, New Hampshire during the months of June, July, August and September. The bookstore will be holding a contest this summer to name Tomie's gnu. (Click on the photo to get a better look at Nesy.)

Artist v. Wildebeest: The Poem

I've never seen a dotted gnu,
Nor one bedecked with flowers
Unless, of course, the ones I've seen
Emerge from "happy hours."

Regardless, though, there's one I've viewed
Transforming from the haze
Of Tomie's blog. He's painting it!
You'd really be amazed!

So all of you who like to see
Your animals "extraordinaire,"
Check out the gnu; he/she is great!
I've ne'er seen one so fair!

Tom Sawyer Syndrome

Kathleen Norris thought that gnu painting was so much fun that she gave Tomie an autographed copy of her newest book, ACEDIA & ME, with the hope that Tomie would let her join in the fun and paint the gnu, too. Tomie happily gave Kathleen a paint brush.

Gnu Faux Pas. We thought that gnu was pronounced ga-new, but we learned it was correctly pronounced nyu. We are mortified!

New Gnu News

Here are Tomie and Bronte applying gesso to the gnu. Oh wait, that's not Tomie! Here are Stephanie, and her assistant Bronte, applying gesso to the gnu. Stephanie is better known as Tomie's house cleaner, and Bronte is better known as man's best friend, but today they are artist's assistants.

Gnu Progress

I thought I'd show you Tomie's progress painting the gnu.

There hasn't been any. Watch for more updates! (I know he's thinking about the gnu, and he knows what he's going to do.)

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing a bunch of painted African wildebeests in our New England town this summer.

Good Luck, Tomie!

A gnu was just delivered. Yikes! Tomie needs to paint it for a fundraiser for a group in New London, New Hampshire: The Gnus of Gnu London. Tomie's gnu has been sponsored by Morgan Hill Bookstore. It will be on display outside the bookstore this summer.
